Licensing requirements exist for all construction projects of $500 or more. (Under certain conditions property owners performing the work themselves or those working with a licensed sub-contractor or general building contractor are exempt from licensing requirements.) In California,  to become a licensed contractor you must be 18 years of age or older.  One must have the experience and skills necessary to manage a construction business, including field supervision, or must be represented by someone else with the necessary experience and skills. A license bond of $10,000.00 is required on all active licenses, and one must be licensed by the California Contractors State License Board.
